Where many other voice training companies have a set method (or formula) they use with all clients, our coaches use a mixed-method approach; tailoring each session to the unique goals, learning styles, and access needs of our clients. At On Voice, our coaches are linked by their inclusive approach — or pedagogical framework for the nerds out there! — to working with clients.
We are all self-proclaimed "voice nerds" and life-long learners who keep up with contemporary voice research (and often contribute to it!) to ensure that our practice grows and develops with us.
Back in 2022, Becca, James, and Frankie were studying together at Central School of Speech and Drama. They all shared a passion (and now, a framework) for inclusive voice training and were developing their specialisms in their dissertation research projects. James was researching approaches to accent training for EAL speakers, Frankie was developing an approach to voice training for comedians, and Becca was developing their gender-expansive voice coaching approach. All three of them were planning on becoming freelance voice coaches upon their graduation.
Then one day Becca had an idea: "What if we collaborate instead of compete?"
Freelance voice coaches find the majority of their work through referrals, but they are left to fend for themselves when it comes to the admin (and costs!) of running our own business. What if we worked together to share costs and labor so that we could provide affordable training to the communities we cared about at a sustainable rate for our own individual practice?
James and Frankie shared this vision of collaboration and recognised another key benefit: we could share ideas, build curriculum, and continue our professional development in support of one another. We could continue to develop our own specialisms and share our learnings with the collective to enrich us all.
And so, On Voice was born.
Now in our fourth year of collaboration, we have been able to share our work with over 130 individual clients and more than 500 workshop attendees through our partnerships with Spotlight UK and Equity UK. Our coaches have helped clients book major motion pictures, perfect their accents for television shows, get into drama schools, and most importantly build their vocal confidence.
